Teaching Philosophy

I teach students of all ages . I work closely with students and families to develop a personalized plan to help my students develop healthy practice habits and further their musicality and technical ability.

Some of my philosophies:

  • Building a foundation of reliable technique
    • Using exercises from various methodologies, I create a personalized routine for each of my students.
    • This process is important because it helps my students create healthy habits that help them build a well-rounded and confident foundation of basic technique.
  • Etudes
    • Practicing and playing etudes is one of the best ways to apply technique and practice musicality.
    • We can also pick and choose etudes from different methodologies to target different interests or problem areas that a student might have.
  • Repertoire exposure
    • I encourage my students to explore different solo pieces from the traditional French horn repertoire.
    • We develop strategies for learning large works including how to break the solos into manageable smaller pieces, what a phrase is and how to make each one musical, and how to study recordings and apply interesting musical ideas to a student's own playing.
  • Performance Anxiety
    • I help my students develop strategies for conquering performance anxiety - both in the moment and anxiety leading up to a performance.
    • I also work to preemptively build up confidence in my students and we work together to find joy and excitement in performing.
    • Performance anxiety is often one of the hardest things for a musician to overcome. For me personally, I've had to work really hard to overcome my anxiety and learn strategies to have a enjoyable and successful performance. Conquering anxiety is something that we can and should practice.

Extracurriculars I help my students prepare for

  • OMEA Solo Competitions
  • All-State Auditions
  • Band Class
  • Placement/Seating Auditions
  • College Auditions
  • Solo Performances
